On this sunny day, March 17th of the year 2010, I took a trip to a place not far from Hunter - the Museum of Moving Image. The subway ride was short and painless, other than the fact that I was led astray by a friend accompanying me.
Upon arrival at the museum I donated a total of four dollars. I know this does not seem like a large sum, but alas - I do not have a lot to give. My friend and I checked in our bags and I checked in my coat. We then proceeded to Tut's Fever Movie Palace.
At Tut's Fever Movie Palace, every day, The Red Balloon is shown at precisely 1:30pm. We arrived shortly thereafter, but did not miss much of this beautiful homage to childhood. It makes me reflect on my own childhood, and I wish I was raised in Europe. The atmosphere there seems so much more relaxed and less industrialized.
After viewing The Red Balloon we went to a film sound exhibit, where we replaced dialogue spoken by Judy Garland and Denzel Washington, in The Wizard of Oz and Glory respectively. On the outside of this exhibit there was quote by Francis Ford Coppola emphasizing the important of sound in film. It's clearly appropriate for this exhibit, and I agree with it one hundred percent. Film is the intersection of sound and image colliding. It would be a sin to downplay the importance of sound.
The flipbook exhibit came next, in which we had a few seconds to capture our motions. We did not purchase the flipbook before we left, as my friend considered it a waste of money. I told her that she could one day show her kids it to show them how cool she used to be.
In the next exhibit we picked a piece of music to accompany a clip from Vertigo. This was a fun exercise to stress the importance of music that is befitting to certain images.
We also looked at the old cameras used for television and film, some of which were quite large and looked difficult to operate. Finally, we scanned the old video games which brought upon nostalgia for the both of us.
All in all, this was an enjoyable experience and I definitely think I will revisit when the renovations are completed.
